Have you ever thought about how “local foods” never seems to include grains and other staple crops? This thought occurred to Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger of Athens, OH in 2008. They got a grant to start test plots of staple crops on four nearby farms, and the public response was so huge that they founded the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative. The collaborative’s first project is Shagbark Seed & Mill Co, which mills grains and corn from local farm partners. The flours, as well as other crops like black beans, are sold to local businesses and grocery stores, and the Ohio University dining halls. Utne Reader named them one of 25 visionaries in 2010–read more here.
Michelle and Brandon will be coming to Oberlin this Thursday at 4:30 in the AJLC to talk about how they started their staple foods collaborative and lead a discussion on the potential future of local grains and staple crops in Oberlin. Come to listen, or to talk about this exciting piece of the local foods movement!
